Lake Blejsko jezero is a small treasure nestled in the heart of the town of Bled. In summer, this gem of emerald hue takes on the air of a lakeside resort and offers visitors numerous outdoor activities. Hiking, chasing the finest panoramic views over the island, stand-up paddling or a ride in a pletna : there are countless ways to discover Lake Bled – and a few mistakes to avoid to sidestep the tourist crowds !

Tip #1: Get off the beaten path!

Discovering Lake Bled: all our tips to make the most of it

Slovenia is a highly sought-after destination. To meet the needs of visitors, tourist attractions are developing to the point of sometimes overshadowing other equally interesting activities and spots (and free ones too)! Bled Island – and its famous lake – is no exception to this trend. Before setting out to discover this fabulous place, here are 3 tips to help you get off the beaten path:

1 - Don't visit Bled Castle just for its panoramic view

Built on a cliff, the Bled Castle overlooks the eponymous island and offers a fine view of the small church and surrounding landscape. This panorama is often highlighted, as it encourages visits to the building! Unless you wish to admire the illusionistic frescoes in the gothic chapel (or discover the gallery's monthly exhibition Stolp) : a stop at the castle is NOT a necessary step to enjoy an unobstructed view. Entry costs €13… A bit steep just for the scenery, don't you think?

2 - Don't linger in the "grand hotels" zone

Many luxury hotels surround Lake Bled. While their beauty is undeniable, they have no tourist interest – unless you decide to spend the night there! The only picturesque appeal is Vila Bled (located 60 m from the lake), known as the former residence of Marshal Tito.

3 - Don't choose Grajsko kopališče beach for swimming

Grajsko kopališče is the private beach of Bled Castle. Considered the « only official public bathing area on Lake Bled », it is nonetheless not the only place where it is possible (and permitted) to swim. Equipped with water sports and well-maintained, it is certainly pleasant, but won't leave you with an unforgettable memory.

Tip #2: Chase the finest panoramic views

Discovering Lake Bled: all our tips to make the most of it

Mala Osojnica hill

To admire the view from the summit of Mala Osojnica, you'll first need to put in some effort! Sitting at 685 meters altitude, this panoramic view is accessible via a forest path (slightly steep). After tackling 45 minutes of hiking, 200 meters of elevation gain, a few roots and the (very steep) staircase at the end of the trail, you'll discover a breathtaking view of Bled Island and its magnificent castle.

Velika Osojnica hill

If you still have some energy left, why not push on to the summit of Velika Osojnica, at 756 meters? About 30 minutes' walk from Mala Osojnica, you'll be able to admire the island and surrounding mountains from a fresh angle. Take the opportunity to find one of the 19 Klopca Ljubezni (or « benches of love »)... Scattered across Slovenian heights, these heart-adorned benches are a charming local attraction.

Kavarna Belvedere

The « Belvedere café » is located above Vila Bled. Less picturesque and far more touristy than the natural viewpoints, this place nonetheless offers an excellent vantage point over the lake… Ideal for the less adventurous! Note that the café is only open from May to September (daily from 10am to 6pm).

Tip #3: Discover Lake Bled from within

Try stand-up paddling

Stand-up paddling (also called SUP) is a water-sports activity. Standing on a long board, the paddler propels themselves using a paddle. To distance yourself from the crowds gathered around the lake's shores, SUP is the ideal activity – and no need to be an expert! Rental agencies provide all the necessary equipment.

Take a pletna ride

The pletna is a traditional and iconic boat of Bled, handcrafted by locals since 1590. It is recognizable by its colorful roof, and is piloted by gondoliers called pletnar – a craft passed down through generations. The lake is equipped with 23 boats.

Tip #4  : Taste a kremsnita

Kremšnita is Bled's iconic pastry because the recipe was invented at the famous Kavarna Belvedere. Yet the Vila Bled café is no longer the best place to taste this cake (made with vanilla and cream). Having become too touristy, the place is now more renowned for its panoramic view than for the quality of its Kremsnita. To discover this Slovenian delicacy, head instead to the Grand Hotel Toplice (located at 12 Cesta svobode) or the local bakery Slaščičarna Zima (at 3 Grajska cesta)!

Frequently asked questions

Entrance to Bled Castle costs €13 per person. This includes access to the frescoes in the gothic chapel and the Stolp gallery. Note that the panoramic view over the lake is accessible free of charge from other observation points such as Mala Osojnica or Velika Osojnica.

Two viewpoints stand out: Mala Osojnica hill (685 m altitude, 45 min hike, 200 m elevation gain) offers a classic view of the island and castle, while Velika Osojnica (756 m, 30 additional minutes) provides a wider angle on the surrounding mountains. Both are free and accessible on foot.

The pletna is a traditional Slovenian boat used since 1590 on Lake Bled. Recognizable by its colorful roof, it is operated by gondoliers called pletnar, a craft passed down through generations. The lake has 23 boats. It is one of the most authentic ways to reach Bled Island.

While the kremsnita recipe (vanilla and cream cake) was invented at Kavarna Belvedere, the best current addresses are the Grand Hotel Toplice (12 Cesta svobode) and the local bakery Slaščičarna Zima (3 Grajska cesta), considered superior to the original café which has become too touristy.

Yes, stand-up paddling (SUP) is an available activity on Lake Bled. Rental agencies provide the necessary equipment (board and paddle), even for beginners. It's an excellent way to get away from crowded tourist areas and discover the lake from the water.

Lake Bled is particularly lively in summer (June-August), the ideal period for water activities such as SUP or swimming. Tourist crowds are at their highest during this time, however. Spring (May) and fall (September-October) offer an ideal compromise with fewer visitors and colorful vegetation. Winter offers a magical setting but with fewer available activities.
