Portorož, "Port of Roses"

Portorož is a renowned Slovenian Adriatic beach resort and one of Slovenia's main tourist destinations. Nestled in the country's south-west, within the municipality of Piran, this thermal spa town spans an area of 297 km². It is home to 2,849 residents according to the 2002 census. Portorož is called Portorose in Italian, meaning "Port of Roses." The town is also nicknamed "Port of Concrete" due to its concrete waterfront.

History

Tourism development in Portorož began in the second half of the 19th century. The Sečovlje Salt Marshes were the major assets highlighted to promote the destination.

Piran's municipal leaders, in collaboration with local physicians, then proposed health treatments using concentrated salt water and saline mud. In 1879, Dr. Giovanni Lugnano was the first to offer such treatments to various visitors. The activity sparked such tourist interest that new resort complexes and villas emerged. Around 1890, the predecessor of today's renowned Hotel Palace was constructed. Thanks to the flourishing of this new healthcare branch, the Ministry of Interior Affairs declared Portorož a thermal spa town. The private villa construction era concluded in 1909, particularly when the doors of Palace Cur Hotel opened—none other than today's famous Palace Hotel. The building's dimensions were ahead of its time. Upon its opening in 1910, it was named "the most beautiful hotel on the Adriatic coast."

Portorož's community stagnated somewhat during the interwar period. The downturn lasted until 1968. Heavily influenced by Yugoslavia, renovation and construction efforts marked the thermal spa's economic revival. Casinos, an auditorium, grand hotels, and more emerged, making the resort exceptionally privileged in terms of tourism.

Today, tourists visit Portorož to relax on the beach or enjoy quality time in the town's restaurants, bars and casinos. Some indulge in water sports to add extra excitement to their Slovenian vacation.
