Historical notes

During Antiquity, the city's history revolved mainly around the Postojna Pass, which was part of the Amber Route. This pass is located near the city of Postojna and reaches an altitude of 606 m. It connects the Slovenian coast on the Adriatic, the Istrian Peninsula and the port of Trieste to the south-west. It also creates a link between the Inner Carniola region and the capital Ljubljana to the north-east. It was precisely through this pass that the Huns, Lombards and Goths passed during the era of major invasions.

In the Middle Ages, the city of Postojna was occupied by Slavic tribes in the 6th and 7th centuries, before belonging to the March of Carniola. It was subsequently governed by various entities.

The city's reputation as a tourist destination began in April 1818, when Luka Čeč, a lighthouse keeper, discovered the most beautiful part of Postojna Cave. In 2018, it fittingly celebrated 200 years of satisfying tourists' curiosity. It remains ready to serve you and make your Slovenia vacation unforgettable.
