Craving an escape just two hours from home? Explore the most beautiful castles in Slovénie! From the medieval castle of Ljubljana to the castle of Dobrovo, passing through the troglodyte castle of Predjama (and its famous Postojna cave) : dive into the historic past of the country…

Why does Slovénie have so many castles?

Approximately 500 castles dot the Slovenian territory. This rich architectural heritage is primarily due to the former Habsburg monarchy, whose legacy is reflected in monuments of different styles and historical periods (medieval, Renaissance, baroque).

Slovénie has also been committed to preserving its heritage since the 1900s, thanks to dedicated legislation and renovations, which help protect castles from the ravages of time…

1. Ljubljana Castle
Journey through Slovenian history: 10 must-see castles!

If you're passing through the Slovenian capital, don't miss Ljubljana Castle. Perched atop a hilltop (to watch for enemy attacks), the building offers stunning panoramic views over the city and its surroundings – on clear days, you can see a third of Slovenian territory!

Damaged, rebuilt and enlarged through political conflicts, the castle's architecture evolved over time, as did its function (residence, military hospital and then prison until the end of World War II).

In the 1960s, major renovation work began on the castle (lasting 35 years). Today, the building houses a museum, an observation tower and an exhibition on Slovenian history. Its other asset: the castle is accessible from Ljubljana's city centre thanks to the funicular inaugurated in 2007!

Practical information

●     Address: Grajska planota 1, 1000 Ljubljana

●     How to get there: by funicular or bike from Ljubljana city centre

●     Opening hours: daily from 9am to 8pm

Renovated the following century, the castle today has around twenty rooms spread over two floors. It also houses the Skofja Loka Museum, renowned for its archaeological, historical and ethnological collections – which testify to the region's past.

You can see frescos, period furniture, as well as relics from World War II. Part of the museum is also dedicated to Ivan Tavčar, a Slovenian writer from the village of Poljane nad Škofjo Loko (located 12 km from the castle). His personal collection consists of furniture, family paintings, etc.
