Turquoise lake, island with baroque bell tower and perched castle: complete guide to visiting Bled, an alpine jewel of Slovénie, in 2 or 3 days.

Among Slovenia's most emblematic icons, Bled possesses all the tourism assets to delight travelers. Its famous lake stands as one of the country's greatest sources of pride. It captures the eye with its lush surroundings and its magnificent island situated in its center. Bled is also renowned for its celebrated castle perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the lake. The latter, adorned with magnificent turquoise blue harmonizes beautifully with the green of the surrounding trees to offer you one of Slovenia's most stunning landscapes. Beyond this, hiking, swimming in the lake, thermal spas, its gastronomy, visiting tourist sites, winter sports, and more will make your vacation in Bled truly unforgettable.

A Glimpse into History

During the Iron Age, the Illyrians and Celts left vestiges proving the colonization of the territory. Successively, kingdoms, bishops, lords, and many different categories of people marked Bled's history. After 1918, the region came under the administration of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, then under the Socialist Republic of Slovenia within Yugoslavia. The Karađorđević family made Bled their summer residence. Subsequently, Marshal Josip Broz Tito did the same and constructed a residence here in 1947. When Slovenia achieved independence in 1991, the Bled region became an integral part of the independent Republic of Slovenia. In 1996, it became a municipality in its own right.

Bled at a Glance

A symbol of Slovenia's beauty, Bled ranks among the municipalities in the northwestern part of the country. This town belongs to the Upper Carniola region (Gorenjska) and nestles at the foot of the Julian Alps. By main road, it lies 1.5 hours north of the capital, Ljubljana.

Bled owes its tourist reputation to its island, its castle, and especially its famous lake (Blejsko jezero), magnificently surrounded by verdant mountains.

Beach tourism has largely contributed to the city's development, as Bled is also a thermal spa resort. The pools of numerous hotels are supplied by the thermal springs located northeast of the lake.

Bled, a Green Destination

Given the natural and tourist riches of this beautiful Slovenian town, Bled has become an advocate of green tourism. It proudly displays the golden badge of the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism (Scheme vert du tourisme slovène). It held 2nd place as "best destination for sustainable development in 2019", within an international non-governmental project called Green Destination. The town of Bled is also part of the "Alpine Pearls" (Alpski biseri) group, which promotes sustainable mobility.

Bled by the Numbers

Bled covers 188.5 km² of Slovenian territory.

In 2012, it counted 8,191 inhabitants.

It sits at an altitude of 507 m and 50 km from the country's capital, Ljubljana.

What to See in Bled?

Lake Blejsko jezero and Its Surroundings

A glacial lake in Slovenia, Lake Bled extends over an area of 1.45 km². It measures 2,120 m long, 1,380 m wide, and reaches a depth of approximately 30 m. It contains 19 fish species—notably carp, trout, and catfish. On its surface, you can admire swans, mallards, and various plant species.

The majestic mountains surrounding the lake are none other than the Julian Alps. This magnificent natural setting places the town of Bled as an unmissable destination on any Slovenia trip. At the foot of the lake nestles the Pokljuka plateau. In its central part lies Bled Island. Emblematic of the country, photos of the lake grace Slovenia's postcards.

The thermal springs located on the northeast side of the lake spring from the lake's tectonic origins. The water temperature reportedly never drops below 20°C. To make it easily accessible to all, the hotels "Grand Hotel Toplice," "Hotel Park," and "Rikli Balance" tap into it to supply their pools. Some hotels warm the water to 22°C. For its part, the lake maintains a temperature reaching 25°C in summer—ideal for a pleasant swim.

Bled Island and Its Church

Slovenia's only island, Bled Island takes pride in honoring its country. It welcomes a beautiful church recognized for its standalone bell tower, built from porous stone called "buckwheat grain." This chapel was formerly a sanctuary dedicated to Živa, the pagan goddess of life and fertility. After Christianization in 745 CE, the structure was transformed into a church with a Gothic nave and consecrated to the Nativity of Mary. It became known as the "Church of the Mother of God" in the 17th century and received baroque styling. The 99-step staircase to reach this religious site was also constructed during the same period.

You will find the famous wishing bell of the church, well-installed alongside two other small bells, in the bell tower. Many visitors ring it themselves while addressing their wishes and prayers to the Mother of God.

Bled Castle

Discover the historic richness of Bled Castle, perched above a cliff 100 m high. It is believed to date from 1004, when German Emperor Henry II gifted it to Albuin, the Bishop of Brixen. Many important entities have succeeded one another in its management. Between 1951 and 1961, renovation works were undertaken. During warm periods, the castle courtyard hosts several cultural events. Bled Castle is also one of the best places to enjoy views of the lake.

What to Do in Bled?

Hiking

Embark on a 6 km walk around the lake. For the most beautiful photos of Lake Bled and its surroundings, explore the hills of Ojstrica and/or Mala Osojnica.

Swimming in the Lake

The lake water is clear and very gentle on the skin, ideal for swimming. During summer, locals flock here in great numbers. You can choose among the grassy beaches of the lake for a good sunbathing session.

Other Water Activities

There's nothing quite like a romantic boat ride to reconnect with your loved one. The lake's natural setting is perfect for intimate moments. Rent a rowboat and charm your partner by rowing across the turquoise waters of Lake Bled.

To add even more spice to your vacation, you can also rent stand-up paddleboards and paddle out to the small island in the lake's center.

Winter Sports

Just as in summer, the winter season offers plenty to enjoy during your stay in Bled. Several activities await you: bowling, ice hockey, and ice skating. Two great addresses to remember:

Bled Sports Palace, located in the city center, welcomes visitors. From October to March, it hosts ice hockey training sessions, figure skating, curling, and broomball. On Fridays, this ice palace sometimes transforms into a disco where lighting effects and the best music from the 70s transport you to another era.

Bled Ice Rink, offers stunning views of Lake Bled from the terrace of "Kavarna Park" café. Each winter, it opens its doors and offers various entertainment programs to spice up your stays in Bled.

The Straža ski slope, the Pokljuka plateau, and Vogel are also excellent addresses for practicing alpine skiing and snowboarding. The Julian Alps near Bled truly favor the town and add extra appeal to its tourist attractions.

Local Gastronomy

Taste the Kremšnita or Kremna Rezina, Bled's emblematic cake. This sweet dessert pairs wonderfully after a stroll along the lake's shores.

Traveling by Museum Train

The railway line connecting Jesenice (Austrian border) and Nova Gorica (Italian border) passes through Bled Jezero, Bohinjska Bistrica, Grahovo, Most na Soči, and Kanal. Experience a museum train journey and travel through the locations included on this line to discover different Slovenian corners. The train is pulled by an old steam locomotive, hence the name museum train.

Other Tourist Attractions in Bled

For the more curious, Bled holds many other unmissable tourist sites. We mention only the first tourist gorge of Bled, the Vintgar Gorge, as well as another at Pokljuka. Nature lovers will also be delighted by the magnificent Šum Waterfall and the one nestled beneath the Iglica mountain. Let yourself be seduced by the natural charm of the majestic Triglav National Park, hidden within the Julian Alps. It is, in fact, Slovenia's only national park. If you prefer monuments, Bled abounds with magnificent churches to visit, beyond the one in the lake's center: the Church of the Mother of God. By way of example, we mention the churches of Saint Martin, Saint James, and Saint Margaret.
